This should have been on Binaural - it would have added so much colour to the album, but perhaps it would have stood out too much. In fact, there are six songs on Lost Dogs that didn't make Binaural, and listening to them, it's hard to understand why. Still - no complaints - it's a treat to hear tracks as good as this any way you can. Ironically, what you might expect to be a mish-mash of throwaway ditties turns out to be a great double-album [endtext]

Watching David Morrissey's "Don't Worry About Me" on BBC2 last Sunday night, I heard this track fully for the first time. I went straight onto IMDb looking through the credits to see who was playing guitar in such a Richard Thompson-esque style, only to discover it probably was Richard Thompson, seeing as the band was Fairport Convention. Sandy Denny is in [probably her] fine[st] voice too.
Perfect song to end a quiet, poignant and charming film.

Time lapse photography is used to great effect in this video, fitting well with the theme of time, even if that's a bit too obvious.
This band has been around since the 80s, and yet I only heard of them relatively recently.

They're a great band to catch up with sometime, if you haven't already.

OK, so this is a bit weird. Rock stars and orchestras usually don't mix, and this is probably no exception. I just found it interesting that Ben Folds sounds so much better than the orchestra. They're pretty out of step and seem to be finding it tough to put any colour into their solo parts. No offence to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra - kudos to them for trying.
Now I'm coming across all patronizing...

Despite that, it's still pretty amazing.

One of my favourites from Whatever and Ever, Amen. You could almost call it jazz.
Why did it ever have to end? I saw those guys at a gig in Dublin's Red Box, of all places, and they nearly shook the place to the ground. They seemed to communicate through some weird telepathic channel - hard to think why they broke up.

Oh well...

Next up is a live version.

Fuck Buttons are from Bristol and they are only amazing...
Yes, I know, provocative name (and a bit silly, if you ask me, which obviously you're not), but this is the sort of progressive music that Bristol (and surrounding towns) has been in the habit of producing over the years.

This track is from their album "Tarot Sport". If you ask nicely I'll "lend" it to you ;)

Put it on your hi-fi and grab your best set of headphones and enter their aural space. Your ears will thank you for it. This clip doesn't do it justice - no lossless compression on youtube unfortunately.

Going to see Pearl Jam in June at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. I expect it will be something like this. Haven't seen them since '96 at the Point in Dublin. Tried to get tickets for the O2 (on the old site of the Point), but logged in a couple of minutes too late :(

Still, Belfast could be even better, and will give us an excuse to see a bit more of the city and hit the Antrim coast after, hopefully with songs like this still ringing in our ears.

Offenbach in the 1860sImage via Wikipedia

The New Year's Day concert performed by the Wiener Konzertverein Orchester featured the orchestrated version of Offenbach's Barcarolle from Les contes d'Hoffmann. It was excellent, but it got me hankering after the 'original' Operatic version, sung by soprano and mezzo-soprano.
Turns out this is harder to find than I expected.
This clip is of soprano Irina Iordachescu and mezzosoprano Cristina Iordachescu singing, accompanied by pianist Gonul Apdula. Enjoy.
